If you have your own fly tackle, great, pick a nice sandeel imitation and go down to the nearest rocky headland that gives way into deepish water. If the fish are there, you should have a great time.

If you don't have any fly tackle, you can look around a few places and get hold of some quite quickly - and quite cheaply too! Glasgow Angling Centre, for example, (www.fishingmegastore.com) has quite a few outfits that they do at very good prices. Ron Thompson rods and reels, for example, are usually very good for the money. I bought the Steelhead Pro and found it a very good little rod for saltwater work.

Saltwater rodding, or fly fishing if you prefer, is becoming increasingly popular. With nothing other than your line and your fly, the amount of movement that you can give to the lure is considerable, literally bringing it to life with little twitches and starts. Small wonder then that mackerel find this method so appealing!
The only thing I would say though is to go for a good quality line. I use Airflo forty plus lines and find that they are really good. A cheap line tends to cut your distance dramatically and so it is worth paying that bit extra, especially if it makes the difference between catching and not catching. In a way, I would sooner pay for a good quality line than the rod!
Different people specify different weights of lines and rods to use, with a lot of them going for nine weights. Personally, it's way too much, unless you intend to use flies the size of a small budgie! I would go for a seven weight rod and then up the line one rating to an eight weight. This is quite strong enough to cope with anything you are going to get in our waters. Yes, I know, bass can grow to double figures but how many times have you seen one in your life? Besides, a seven weight can handle a fifteen pound trout so why not a big bass?
