We were into fish fairly quickly, but they were small and not as numerous as Saul liked them to be so we were soon off to another spot. In fact, over the day, we moved about three times to try and find better fishing. I caught about fifteen fish, including yellow grouper, silver bream and short spined sea scorpions but didn't get through to anything larger, which the skipper had worried about before we even set off. At the beginning of the trip Saul had grimaced over the weather. Apparently flat calm and blue skies over here are not as good for fishing as slightly choppy seas. They do get bigger fish - a lot bigger with excellent shark, dorado and big game fish running in the area in the appropriate season - as well as some much bigger fish over the reefs. Today was just one of those days though - plenty of small fish, which put an interesting bend in the saltwater quiver tip rods that we were using - but the bigger ones were obviously busy somewhere else! Still, it was well worth a go!
Yellow grouper and silver bream formed the majority of the fish caught, along with a solitary Spanish mackerel.
