Based in Chillington, Devon Angling Centre is an Aladdin's cave of tackle and tackle accessories, with one of the largest range of lures that I have ever seen in a shop, making it perfect for visiting bass anglers or indeed anyone keen on plugging or spinning.

The outside, which fits in well with its rustic surroundings, is deceptive for inside the sheer quantity of goods on offer is staggering. Storm lures, a wide range of accessories, rods and reels from Grauvell, Shakespeare, ABU, Masterline, Fishrite and Snowbee, to name just a few, jostle for space amongst a range as comprehensive as it is unusual.
Why unusual? Malcolm, the owner of the shop, is quite prepared to have a go at selling items that some others might think are, shall we say, a little peripheral. Take, for example, the Bradley smokers that he is so enthusiastic about. At £269 they are certainly not cheap but they are large enough to make smoking your catch a far more serious proposition than most other brands. With a dedicated range of accessories and carefully graded fuels they are enough to make your mouth water!

Malcolm was also quick to embrace the new style of continental beachcasters, stocking in quite a few models from both Shakespeare and Grauvell, about which he is particularly enthusiastic. Long distance casting has always been regarded as the province of the elite few, but these light, easy to manage rods offer everyday anglers the opportunity to put out baits a long way beyond their ordinary casts, which, he reckons, can only be for the good.
He has also been following the growing trend of saltwater rodding and has recently introduced a new fly section which he already intends to expand. Quite where, considering the well stocked shelves, the carp tackle, the clothing, lobster pots, bait traps etc. will probably be an interesting challenge but, for myself, I will look forward to popping back in a few months time and seeing how the shop has developed. It will be interesting to see what new surprises there are!
Chillington is a lovely spot but hardly a teeming metropolis so it comes as no surprise that Malcolm has also embraced new technology, setting up a thriving internet site through which he conducts most of his business. This can be found on www.anglingcentre.net or click on the shop logo (top right corner) to go straight to it from here.
