When a mackerel takes, strike quickly but don't move the tackle too far if you miss the bite. If you have ever watched mackerel chasing fry, they often bang the fry as they pass, stunning them, before turning around to leisurely mop them up. If you reel in straight away, you will often miss the main bite that is just about to follow the first, quick strike.
Once you have caught a mackerel, please think seriously about how many you actually need. A lot of people go into 'slaughter mode' with mackerel and often there is really no need. Don't take any below 12 inches long and, once you have enough for your needs, why not pop the rest back alive?
